Kongsberg Automotive has learned to manage challenging times and is in a constant changing and improvement mode. The fields of health, safety, environment and quality are also evolving, and global head Matthias is constantly seeking opportunities to improve his organization and to exceed customer requirements.
Matthias has a university degree within chemical engineering and began his career within ecological textiles and quality management. After various international assignments he entered Kongsberg Automotive in 2007 as Quality director. He is now the Senior Vice President Quality & HSE.
“Working with quality and corporate responsibility in Kongsberg Automotive is something I find very exciting. It is a journey I started more than 20 years ago, working with global supply chain management, environmental aspects and working conditions. It is like going back to my roots,” said Matthias
I have an addiction to quality and a passion for people. I have always been attracted by working and developing people with a different cultural background and in different functions than myself
Culture and values
In one of his previous roles within the automotive industry, Matthias became familiar with the culture before he joined the company.
“I always felt that this company was different from the other companies I had previously worked with. The level of accountability, trust, transparency, improvement orientation and honesty follows a Nordic tradition and working culture which is appealing to me”, he said.
Matthias was faced with a challenging quality issue in the beginning of his career in Kongsberg Automotive, and he and his team used well proven techniques to solve the issue for the customer.
“By understanding the requirement, defining root cause of the problem and focusing on a solution together with a team of qualified and passionate people are key elements to solve such a task successfully,” Matthias said.
Openness and trust are important for him. Indeed, when Matthias first introduced himself to the management team of a plant he said “I need you to help me to understand and learn this business”.
Focus on quality
The quality team has restructured and gained a clear global focus, better quality tracking, key performance indicators (KPIs), standardized management systems and processes, quality strategies, skill assessment and people development plans. Matthias is confident that this helps to being the preferred business partner and improving customer satisfaction.
